One of the many strange things about this unusual era of American politics is the feeling that historic events are over before they have begun. A deeply divided political system is often a predictable political system. Today, the House of Representatives will vote on two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. The result is a foregone conclusion.
Trump will become the third President in US history to be impeached. He will then face a trial in the Senate, accused of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. That process may have its moments, but it will end, as unsurprisingly as every other stage of the impeachment business so far, in acquittal.
