SMSU tallies four top-five finishes at Buena Vista Open

STORM LAKE, Iowa- Cortez Arredondo and Andrew Petersen each went 3-1 and finished in third in their respective weight classes as the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team returned to open competition at the Buena Vista Open on Saturday on the campus of Buena Vista University.

Brock Buysse went 4-1 on the day and was the consolation champ in the 133 weight class.

Arredondo won a 3-1 decision over Zach Burns of Upper Iowa in the third-place match at 149 while Petersen won by tiebreaker in the third-place match at 285.

Taylor Curtis finished in fourth place at 125 after falling by a 3-1 decision in the third place match to Hasan Krigger of Iowa Lakes.

Jackson Ryan lost by a 6-4 decision in the third-place match at 197 to finish in fourth while Ben Thompson made it to the fifth-place match in the same weight class before dropping a 12-2 major decision to Matt Blome of Minnesota State to finish in sixth.

Justin Haneke finished the day 3-1 and made it to the fifth-place match as well wrestling at 157 but lost by fall to finish in sixth.

Southwest Minnesota State will return to action on Dec. 9 in the Augustana Duals where they will face Northwestern (Iowa), Morningside (Iowa), Nebraska-Kearney and Drury (Mo.).
