Sara Danius, who has died of cancer aged 57, was a professor of literature at Stockholm University who became an unlikely casualty of the #MeToo movement when she was effectively forced to resign her position as the first female permanent secretary, or leader, of the Swedish Academy, the body that awards the annual Nobel Prize for literature.

The crisis began in November 2017 when the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter published claims by 18 women that they had been raped, sexually assaulted or harassed by Jean-Claude Arnault, the French theatre director husband of Katarina Frostenson, a long-standing Academy member and poet.
