Boris Johnson must talk America and Iran out of a disastrous war or risk dragging Britain into it

Boris Johnson’s comments on Qassim Suleimani’s death reflect Britain’s on-going effort to bridge a widening rift between Europe and the United States over President Trump’s hardline and increasingly erratic Iran policy.

That rift was on display yesterday as the European Union invited Iran’s foreign minister, a man the US sanctioned only this summer, for talks in Brussels to try and defuse the crisis.

Europe remains desperately committed to diplomacy, even as Mr Trump blows up Iranian generals.
